What should I do? MBA or not?

Hey guys,

I badly need your advice on whether I should do an MBA or not.

A bit about my background and goals: I have working in investment consulting for a few years now, have CFA, graduated in engineering from a good engineering school. I know a lot about asset allocation and general investment strategies, but not a ton about company valuation.

I have been accepted to Wharton and my goal is to be investment analyst at a hedge fund or long-only equity shop. Most of these places want people who did banking analyst or PE before MBA (maybe equity research too). I don't have any of these experiences. So I'm obviously at a disadvantage against these folks.

Undergrad Inquiry: CFA designation for AM? How does an MBA look?

Hey fellow Monkeys,
I'm an undergrad finance student at a non-target in the midwest with interest of entering into AM after undergrad. Currently am reading the intelligent investor and the topic of CFA came up. For those in the business, could I get your opinion on whether it is something to pursue relative to the time commitment it entails.

Career wise I would like to start in AM, and from there either continue in AM, go PE, or start a HF once I have been around the block and developed a more extensive track record. I really enjoy investing and learning about companies and have learned a lot about the financial markets because of this, but I'd like to hear about the versatility (if any) for getting the CFA versus an MBA, or if neither are really needed.

Thanks in advance!

CFA Success

I was wondering if there were any Monkeys out there that switched from a non-Asset Management role in banking to Asset Management role by passing the level exams of the CFA and networking through CFA associations. This would be ideal, rather than spending over $100K going to business school to obtain an MBA. If any one out there has successfully done this it'd be great if you shared your story.

BlackRock Financial Markets Advisory - Associate Interview

Hello Everyone,

I just got an interview invite from the FMA group at BlackRock for an Associate position (post MBA) in the London office. I did a search here but could not find much about the format of the interview conducted by BR at the Associate level within FMA. Can someone shed some light on the type of questions or past experiences? Is it mostly behavioural or technical? Any advise on what to brush up for the technical interview?

Thanks a lot!

Info on Loomis Sayles?

Does anybody have any details about Loomis Sayles? I know it has been around for about 90 years, has historically been a fixed-income shop, has Dan Fuss, and is a traditional Boston-based mutual fund company with many "lifers." Other than that, how is it perceived in the investment management world? What do they pay relative to the industry? Are the exit-ops equivalent to other investment management companies? i.e., HFs, top b-schools?

Country Risk Analyst

I saw a couple positions popping up as Country Risk Analyst in Credit Risk at BB banks. I apologise if this is not the right forum - I noticed a few past discussions for Credit Risk had been here, and it wasn't really obvious to me where else it ought to go.

Sell side research -> asset management transition

Hi everyone, I'm currently working at a bb in research at the junior level and I'm considering switching to Asset Management (mostly for life style, work/life balance reasons). I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the transition or any insight on how difficult this is to accomplish. It would also be really great to hear your thoughts on how you find work different or similar. I would assume less time spent on marketing/pitching and more on analysis.

Has anyone been able to find a list of U.S. based family offices? I know they're not as readily accessible but I was wondering if someone had one on deck. Would save me hours of research.

Citi PB Client Service Officer Position

Can anybody tell me what exactly a client service officer position would entail for someone fresh out of undergrand? In what ways do you service clients?

Would there be opportunities to move on to the actual investment management side of things or would this lead to a career that strictly involves front office roles?

What about pay scale and compensation?

Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,

Lets say I want to gift 20k to my son. Obviously I can pass on 14k without inuring any gift tax but can I give $6,040 to my cousin (pay him 40 dollars lets say so cover wiring expenses, etc) and have him gift 6k to my son? where dem pwm folks at? It seems like if I wanted to I could do this (x1000) and gift my son tons of money tax free? That is assuming I knew 1000 people I actually trusted with to give the money back.

Exit opps for fund-of-funds

I will be interning this summer at a fund-of-funds that invests in asia and EM managers. My work will be split between both hedge fund managers and PE managers. Curious to know what type of jobs this internship could set me up for when I go through full-time recruiting in the fall? As of now, I plan to target fund-of-funds, alternative Asset Management divisions within banks, and global market rotational programs at banks.

WSO AMers,

I could really use your help preparing for an upcoming interview. The challenge here is that I'm jumping industries from commercial banking to Asset Management so the relevant techniques I learned in school are a little rusty.

The job description specifically mentioned DCF, APV, and relative valuation techniques are necessary. So, I'm planning to do a DCF and enterprise valuation. I need help with the DCF portion.

Financial Model Help for Interview

Could anyone look over a financial model for me? I've got an interview where I hope to bring a valuation of a company, but my projected balance sheet is off by a small amount. It's immaterial but I don't know if that's normal or not. I could really use the help of a fresh set of eyes.

Please let me know. I will PM the person the file.

finally made it to front office - where do I go from here?

About me - came from a back office/middle office but very generalist role at a start up AM firm that became quite successful (literally started as intern in a mail room mailing out information to prospects - moved up to operations then to product management and development). Firm got taken out by a big fish where they offered me a very silo-ed job in an area I didn't like so I left to go to grad school. Got hired into a front office at a fairly sizable and reputable firm where I help PM a sizeable pot of money in equities to models developed by our quants (trading strategy, optimization etc, day to day crossing the Ts and dotting Is to make sure the portfolios don't blow up but not the overarching strategy on the portfolio).
